Walrus Sign, Superdog Jake approach last phases & Carving Concrete!

The past day I got to make last refinements to both the Superdog Jake sculpture and the Walrus sign. For the walrus sign, the gold leafing went really well. I applied a layer over the already sprayed metalic rim. I decided to paint the background a light green hue and gave it a bit of a gradient towards the bottom. I am really pleased with how it turned out and how the color scheme compliments the red tinge of the walrus. It seems to work out just right!

I made some revisions to the Superdog Jake sculpture including painting parts of it yellow. What makes a big difference is the different effects I can achieve through just paint. For instance, by adding a darker wash over the yellow I can give the piece a lot more depth and dimensionality. As for the wings on the side of the car, I painted the edges as though it were a metal wing, and its edges were chipped. I had a lot of fun texturing the superdog Jake sculpture!

I am really pleased with how these two pieces are turning out. Today I ran out and got some pieces so I can hang up the walrus sign, and picked up some more concrete mix. By the end of this week, the walrus sign and superdog jake projects should be all done after applying a coat of varnish to waterproof them. Then I will take photos and do up a presentation.

Today was a unique day in that I got to mix and begin a little concrete project for the first time on my own. I cup up a piece of plywood and stapled metal lath onto it, then got to mixing concrete. I am going for a wood texture. Doing this kind of exploration will be important for me to get to know the different possilbites I can achieve with concrete on a flat surface. This will help me when I go to, say, theme a wall, a structure or bigger scale sculpture.

Its going really well so far. I waited for the concrete to set and then began carving.

I got three packs of Quikcrete concrete mix and oh boy! they are heavy! But they will come in handy as I do my portfolio exploration pieces,

Stay tuned...
